And I think that my readers who suffer from chronic illnesses will appreciate my choice of an NPO, which is one started by Lisa Copen, when she felt led to offer Christian support to those who have invisible illnesses in 1996. You can read about that in About at Rest Ministries. There is a little bit of paying it forward here as well, because if you are ill and have not heard of Rest Ministries, you may be missing something that perhaps would be an aid and an inspiration to you. Also, Rest Ministries started with a God-sized dream, because I have no doubt that Lisa Copen, the creator of this ministry was inspired to do so by God.
Being afflicted with invisible illnesses myself, it was a comfort for me to find there were other Christians that understood. Actually, I had never even heard the term "invisible illness." However, I understand the indignities and misunderstandings conveyed in the term, because I had experienced them. An invisible illness is an illness which inflicts damage and discomfort on the body of a person; but when other people look at you, they see a normal person.
For instance, you may have Fibromyalgia or Arthritis and ache in every place imaginable, but other people don't understand why you cannot do the activities they do. In fact, many times people with invisible illnesses are made to feel like they are faking it, or they are lazy. There are many, many invisible illnesses, and sometimes sufferers have more than one. However, they tend to look just like everyone else looks. They work with you and go to church with you. Or they may stay home, because they are too exhausted to go anywhere. Or maybe they can't go out around many people, because the additional input into their psyche and brain is actually overwhelming and painful.
One day, a person with an invisible illness might have a good day and go somewhere fun, but they will probably pay for several days afterwards. You may see a healthy looking person park in a handicap space or use an electric cart at the store. What you don't know is that person would probably not be able to shop without those services. One should not make judgments about another person by their outside appearance, because one does not know what is going on in his or her body.
Invisible illness has always been with us. However, sometimes in this society of the health conscious and exercise cures all, the sadly sick, often incurable are blamed for what they did not ask for. I found Rest Ministries to be an oasis in the midst of misunderstanding and ignorance. Rest Ministries was there when I needed to find help for what I was going through in trying to deal with my illnesses. Rest Ministries helped me to get a handle on dealing with illness, when I lived somewhere that other people had no conception what I was dealing with. Truthfully, I often didn't have much understanding myself. I could not understand why nothing I tried was making me well, or why I always had relapses. But restministries.com was there, and from what I can see, they are even better today than they were when I discovered them.
I'm linking up with other God-sized dreamers at Holley Gerth's. Come join us each Monday for encouraging one another in our God-sized dreams. A God-sized Dream = A desire in your heart for more of what God has for you.

I'm glad you've found a place that you can turn to, I've never heard of Rest ministries. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThank you for taking the time to read about Invisible Illness, Alecia.
DeleteThis is a new NPO on me, Debby, but so appropriate for you to support and highlight here. When first diagnosed with an invisible illness we can feel invisible to others in our pain and distress, and it really helps to find great resources such as these that understand, inform, help and support what we are going through. Thanks for sharing and enlightening us all at the same time! Bless you, my friend. Love and prayers, Joy xxx
ReplyDeleteOne of my problems was I did not feel invisible. Being a minister's wife, I felt way too visible. I struggled with not being able to get well, and I feared people not understanding when I could not be at church. It was horrible. I still have never had any minister's wife explain to me what they have done in that situation, or if they have been in that situation. It only made being sick worse, because I actually discovered there were many that didn't notice if I was there or not (so maybe I did feel invisible sometimes); and, I felt very unfairly judged at times by a few people. What I have learned is to not try to decide what people are thinking, when I really don't know. That helped enormously. Love you too, Deborah
DeleteJust like Alecia and Joy this is the first time I have heard of this NPO but I look forward to researching it more so that I can pass it on as an encouragement to those that suffer mostly in silence around me.
ReplyDeleteAmy, that is wonderful. Thank you.
DeleteI have SLE and have been encouraged over the years by Lisa Copen and her ministry. Great choice!
ReplyDeleteMelissa, prayers going out for you here. I'm glad you have been blessed by Rest Ministries. Lisa Copen listened to the Lord on this one, didn't she?
DeleteI am so glad you introduced Rest Ministries. I look forward to checking it out. My heart goes out to you in your illness. I am SO thankful GOD understands. It really doesn't matter what people think. At the end of the day, pleasing Him is all that matters. What a relief that is! I loved your post today, as always. May God continue to bless you and uplift you with that precious everlasting arms! You bless me so much, and I love and appreciate you.

Thank you, Cheryl. I love and appreciate you too, and I am glad God has brought you into my life (tears in the eyes). I am looking forward to heaven and having the blessing of hugging all the people I have never got to meet in person. 'Cause that is what I would do if I saw you -- give you a big, joyful hug.

Thank you so much for your kind article. It always amazes me the journey God has brought me on (and how He continues to do so) and the fact that I can encourage others along the way--through my own struggles - wow. That is a God thing and how He wanted this world to work, right? That we can all encourage each other just as you do on your blog. Thanks you, Deborah. Very much...
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lisa. God spoke to your heart and you answered, thus helping thousands of people. I looked for Rest Ministries, because I needed help understanding what was going on and because I was desperate to find understanding. Thanks to the Lord leading me to you, I began to heal--not physically--but spiritually and psychologically. And I started learning how to live life as a person with severe chronic illness. I had found very little out there I could connect with, until I found rest ministries.
